My aunt has been caring for her husband, who's been bedridden for years now and often confused from meds. After a recent 10-day hospice stay, theyre sending him home because insurance only covers 12 days. They've had long-term care insurance with John Hancock, but my aunt hasn't been able to file a claim to keep him in the facility, even though she's had almost 2 weeks. She's really overwhelmed and proud, so it's hard to help her out. I'm trying to figure out if it's the insurance or just the tough situation wearing her down.

My cousin went through something similar, his dad got sent home early even with John Hancock long-term care insurance. It turns out that they require the claim to be filed and approved before they'll make any payments. Your aunt probably needs to provide proof of care needs and get the facility certified. It's a bit of a hassle, but if you call John Hancock directly, it can help expedite the process. It might also be beneficial for you to step in and help with the filing

Why are we letting private insurers like John Hancock hold families hostage with red tape when someone's dying? If you've paid into long-term care for years, shouldn't access be humane not a bureaucratic endurance test at the worst possible time?
