Home improvement for an amputee

I need help with finding ways in which I can help my mother with her mobility. She's scheduled to have her leg amputated and we need to start preparing our home, basically turning it into a nursing home. What would you recommend? It's a two story house, meaning there are stairs as well.

That sounds incredibly tough, and I'm really sorry you and your mom are going through this, have you had a chance to talk with an occupational therapist about doing a home assessment to guide what you'll need?
